Samurai Battles: Best Historical Board Game of 2012!

Zvezda is extremely proud to announce that Samurai Battles—our historical boardgame of samurai warfare in Japan’s feudal age—has been honored with the Origins Award for Best Historical Boardgame of 2012!

For 39 years, the Origins Awards and the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design has recognized the best new games in a variety of categories. The top five games in each category are presented to the attendees of the Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio, who are eligible to vote for the best titles in each category.

Samurai Battles was the best new historical board game of 2012. So saith the game industry professionals and the gamers who attended Origins when they voted for it in the 39th annual Origins Awards. But what is Samurai Battles? What makes it the best historical board game of the year?

Samurai Battles is a historical board game that puts YOU in command of your very own feudal-era Japanese army, using beautifully-sculpted and historically accurate plastic models. You must muster your force of highly-disciplined samurai warriors and eager ashigaru soldiers and attack your enemy without mercy! In reality, Samurai Battles is "two games in one box". Everything you need to play The Art of Tactic and Commands & Colors is included inside the massively-packed box:

Art of Tactic (designed by Konstantin Krivenko): This game will confront you with the same kind of challenges that a real samurai commander would face on the field of battle: the unknowable plans of your foe and an ever-changing course of events! Using the specially designed unit cards, you and your opponent both secretly issue orders to your troops—orders that are then executed simultaneously!

Commands & Colors (designed by Richard Borg)This award-winning system finally gets the samurai-treatment! The uncontrollable "fog of war" is represented by the special deck of Command cards, while secret plans, dirty tricks, and the whims of fate are revealed through the unique Dragon cards.

Either game system is worthy of the title "Best Historical Board Game", but with Samurai Battles, you get them both!

Ticket to Ride finally goes Android!

Days of Wonder, the publisher of the infamous Ticket to Ride board game, announced this week the Ticket to Ride application is now available for Android devices. Fans of the game and non-iPhone customers have been pleading with Days of Wonder to release an Android version of the app for many months. The iOS version was a huge hit and sat at the top of the popular downloads list for weeks.

We chatted with Mark Kaufmann from Days of Wonder recently about the success of the Days of Wonder app market and the launch of the TTR Android application - here's what he had to say:

"Days of Wonder has been able to directly track the relationship between digital versions of its games on sales of the physical boardgames. Following the release of Small World for the iPad, the next quarter's Small World board game sales jumped 26% and SmallWorld's Q4 sales that year were 30% higher than the previous year. Ticket to Ride saw an even larger jump. After the release of Ticket to Ride for iPad the following quarter saw a whopping 200% increase in board game sales. The Q4 numbers that year were 42% higher than the previous year's Q4 results. We expect that this month's release of Ticket to Ride for Android will continue to help increase exposure to the board game and increase tabletop sales."
